Disney Magical Fighting All-Stars Ultimate is an upcoming crossover fighting game developed by Bandai Namco Studios and Heavy Iron Studios and published by Bandai Namco Games in Japan and by THQ Nordic in the rest of the world. It is the sequel to Disney Magical Fighting All-Stars Universe and the fifth installment in the Disney Magical Fighting All-Stars series, succeeding its predecessor. It was released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on November 20th, 2018.
The gameplay of the game itself mainly competes with Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Nickelodeon's Nicktoons Super Splash Bros. Ultimate. The story mode of the game is mostly based on Kingdom Hearts, Gameloft's Disney Magic Kingdoms and PerBlue's Disney Heroes: Battle Mode, but with the mixture of its previous games like Disney Magical Fighting All-Stars Universe and Disney Magical Fighting All-Stars Revolution.
The concept for a new Disney Magical Fighting All-Stars game was completed in December 2015 during the development of the prequel's downloadable content. Series creator and director ??? returned along with Bandai Namco Studios and Heavy Iron Studios, the studios that developed the previous game. The studios' return sped up the preparation process. ???'s goal with Ultimate was to include every character from previous games despite the various development and licensing problems this would cause. The game engine was built from scratch and upgraded the textures and lighting effects of previous games. Ultimate was announced at the THQ Nordic Gamescom 2018 and was released for the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Microsoft Windows on November 20th, 2018.
A Deluxe Edition of the game was formally announced as part of Disney's 100 Years of Wonder Celebration on September 12, 2022, and was later officially announced on September 27, 2023. It is slated to be released sometime in 2024 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. This edition will include new content from all across Disney's brands, in addition to third-party companies, and integrate the DLC fighters from the original version into the base Deluxe Edition game. It was later revealed to be an enhanced version of the game, with the series' director signing on as the creative consultant. He later went on to say that this might be the final game in the series before a future title that features less content in general than Ultimate if it was ever considered.
