Story[]
Luigi is relaxing at home, napping in the sunlight on his porch, when he hears the Mailtoad driving away. He goes up to the mailbox, with his Polterpup behind him. Opening it, he recieves a letter from Mario , stating that they have been invited to a fabulous estate that is supposedly owned by Professor E. Gadd. Excited by the fact that he will get to see E. Gadd again, Luigi packs his bags and, along with Polterpup, drives his kart towards the Sunshine Airport, where everyone is waiting. It turns out that not only Mario and Luigi are invited, but also Princess Peach, Princess Daisy , Princess Rosalina , Pauline , Yoshi , Donkey Kong , Diddy Kong , Toad , Toadette , five Toad assistants, and, strangely, Wario and Waluigi . The group are taken by Spectral Airlines to the estate via private jet, which Bowser and Bowser Jr. are riding, due to them being invited as well. After arriving, E. Gadd takes everyone to the main entrance to the estate, which is comprised of ten areas, alongside a Lab set up by E. Gadd at his personal mansion, a mysterious tower dubbed the ScareScraper , a small theme park titled ScreamPark , and a construction area called the Conspooktion Site. E. Gadd leads everyone to special, personalized rooms within the estate's main mansion, and Luigi decides to go to sleep early after the long flight. However, after waking up in the middle of the night, he finds that his room has been changed, much like the beginning of Luigi's Mansion 3, into a stereotypical spooky bedroom. He traverses the hallway outside, only to find that the E. Gadd that they had met earlier was, in fact, King Boo in disguise! He explains to Luigi that he managed to bust out of E. Gadd's ghost container, and he trapped Mario, Peach, Bowser, and all of Luigi's friends in paintings. He then pulls out one final painting, but before he can trap Luigi in it, Polterpup emerges from his doggy travel case and knocks the portrait away, causing King Boo to flee out of surprise. Luigi then decides to follow Polterpup, who leads him to the underground lab. There, Luigi finds the real Professor E. Gadd, who hunkered down in the lab to protect himself from King Boo. He reveals that King Boo took over the estate, transforming it from a lovely paradise into a ghostly nightmare. He gives Luigi the Poltergust X-500, equipped with the Strobulb, Dark-Light Device, Suction Shot, Slam, Burst, and Gooigi. However, it also features the Spinout, which whirls the ghost around, and the Shocker Shot, which shoots a plug that electrically charges objects it sticks into. Luigi now has to travese all 10 locations: Dreary Manor, Phantasm Gardens, The Bogwood, Camp Creep, Paranormal Peaks, Darkwater Lagoon, Tomb Valley, Carnival of Illusions, Terror Mines & King Boo's Castle. However, after traversing 9 of the areas & rescuing everyone, King Boo traps everyone in portraits again, Professor E. Gadd included. He then dares Luigi & Polterpup to follow him to his castle and face him. Luigi pursues him to King Boo's Castle, defeating his ghostly minions as he ascends the frightful fortress. At the top, Luigi finds that King Boo has kept Mario, Peach, Daisy, Bowser, & Professor E. Gadd in separate portraits, while the rest of the group has been put in an ensemble portrait. He laughs, bragging to Luigi that he has finally found a place to begin his world conquest. He states that after he defeats and traps Luigi and Polterpup, he will turn the world into a living nightmare. He then begins the fight, scaring Luigi as he does so. Depending on the total amount of money the player accrues, as well as how many of King Boo's Vault keys the player has, one of three endings can play.
Endings[]
Bad (False) Ending[]
Luigi rescues everyone, but did not get any of the Keys to King Boo's Vault, thus preventing access to the altar that keeps the estate a haunted wasteland. Luigi and the others escape the Estate, deciding to return home. However, at Luigi's home, Luigi gazes into a mirror, which reflects King Boo back at him. Luigi screams in fright as a paranormal force pulls him into the mirror. The mirror shakes for a bit before going still as the screen goes dark, with King Boo's chilling laughter echoing soon after.
Good Ending (1-5 Vault Keys collected)[]
Luigi frees everyone, but King Boo reawakens and prepares to attack. Luigi quickly uses the Suction Shot to grab a mirror, reflect King Boo's attack right back at him, leaving him stunned. Luigi then sucks him up, but the battle causes the castle to become unstable. Everyone escapes as the castle falls apart. The valley is still haunted, but the ghosts now are benevolent and decide to help Professor E. Gadd with his research. Meanwhile, everyone enjoys their time at the estate, with Luigi resting in his room, happy with his work.
True Good Ending (All 9 Vault Keys collected)[]
Luigi defeats King Boo, sucking him up instantly. This frees everyone, and breaks King Boo's power over the estate. After rescuing everyone from the portraits, the group travels to King Boo's vault. Opening it, they destroy the altar within, returning the estate to normal & making all the ghosts friendly. The castle collapses shortly afterwards from the shock of the altar's destruction, but the group escapes before it fully falls apart. The group then has a truly wonderful vacation at the estate. Meanwhile, Luigi rests on a hammock at E. Gadd's mansion, with Polterpup laying on top of him, as the two enjoy a well-deserved rest after saving everyone once more.
