The Nintendo Matrix is a home console developed and manufactured by Nintendo, serving as a successor to the Nintendo Switch 2. It was released on November 18, 2033 as a ninth-generation console, competing with the PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Unlike the Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Matrix uses optical discs, therefore it is compatible legitimately with the Nintendo GameCube, Wii and the Wii U. However, there is an extension sold separately that can make the console play Nintendo GameBoy, GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advance, DS, 3DS, and Switch titles. It would also be the very first Nintendo Console to ulitize CD, Ultra Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray and DVD discs too.[]
The Nintendo Matrix goes back to Nintendo’s roots and is more streamlined than past consoles, focusing more on games and quality and less on gimmicks, other than its connectivity with the Nintendo HDS. Also, rather than the normal apps like Nintendo Online and EShop (although these two would be included too), it goes back to the Wii’s channels. It was first revealed at the 2021 Game Awards and more information was revealed throughout 2022. It received critical acclaim for its large, high-budget feel, in comparison to the Nintendo Switch’s more grounded feel, large list of launch titles, and even, it's gigantic roster of Virtual Console games from past Nintendo consoles.[]
Development[]
After the poor sales of the Wii U and the mediocre sales of the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo wanted to make a new console that would be as big and ambitious as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. They decided to go back to their roots and make their new console more similar to the Wii, using some of its core features such as its channels and its virtual console games. In that case, they wanted to make a very unique controller, similar to the Wii’s remotes. They decided to make the controllers have screens on them, similar to the Wii U’s GamePad, but more controller-like and with more motion controls and screen controls.
