Paper Mario: Construction Capers is a action-adventure role-playing video game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch.

Gameplay[]

Following the footsteps of Super Mario Odyssey, Construction Capers will feature a set of open-world levels known as Kingdoms. The game uses flat three-dimensional models, as in previous Paper Mario games, and a world made of craft materials and fabrics similar to Sticker Star.

The game will also have real time battles where Mario and enemies fight at the same time. While exploring, players are free to gather resources, collect enemy parts, talk to non-player characters, consult Monty for assistance, solve puzzles, complete platforming challenges, save the game at certain points, and build constructs.

World Map[]

Players traverse Kingdoms through a world map. The goal of each Kingdom is to collect as many Power Moons as they can. Upon collecting enough Power Moons, the player unlocks a path, allowing them to access new Kingdoms.

Across the map are eight "roshambo" temples, where the player can compete in roshambo tournaments (a game similar to rock–paper–scissors).

On occasion, the player must race a grey Shy Guy called the Shy Bandit around the map to a specific level. The Shy Bandit will attempt to demolish constructs from the Kingdom. If successful, all constructs in the Kingdom revert to their unbuilt state. If the player reaches the Kingdom before the Shy Bandit, the player is rewarded with 300 coins. If the player reaches the level after the Shy Bandit but before it breaks all the constructs from the Kingdom, they enter a normal battle with the Shy Bandit.

Abilities[]

New to Construction Capers is the build hammer, which can build constructs found throughout the Kingdom. It requires resources to use. The resources are Wood, Metal and Stone, which can be obtained by striking objects with the hammer. The type of area the player is building in determines the amount of resources required and used. The player can increase their resource capacity by collecting hammer scraps.

Players can also use "cutout" ability from Color Splash to reach otherwise inaccessible areas in levels. This ability uses depth perception and other optical illusions to allow a portion of the level to be removed with scissors. To use the ability, the player traces the path of the scissors.
