Super Mario Fighters (スーパーマリオファイターズ Sūpāmariofaitāzu), known as Mario Championship on the arcade versions in North America and Europe, is a competitive fighting game developed by Nintendo and Capcom. The game, which allows players to fight using characters from the Super Mario Bros. series in the gameplay style of Power Stone. It was later ported to the Nintendo 64.

A high-definition port, titled Super Mario Fighters for Wii U, was also released for the Wii U on November 2014.

Plot[]

Bowser, along with Boo and Kamek, plans to take over the Mushroom Kingdom. Toad manages to gather everyone, capable to stop Bowser's plans. However, only one can do it. With each individual who each wants a shot at Bowser, a fighting tournament is held to decide who will face Bowser once and for all.

Characters[]

  • Mario – Mario uses his normal abilities to attack his opponents.
  • Yoshi – Makes use of his flutter jump abilities, giving him a distinct advantage over the other fighters.
  • Luigi – Luigi can jump higher and run faster than Mario.
  • Princess Peach – Known in-game as Peach, she specializes in defensive abilities being able to deliver super-powerful counterattacks.
  • Wario – Wario attacks using his close combat abilities, grabs and dashes.
  • Koopa Troopa – Known in-game as Koopa (Nokonoko in the Japanese version), he uses his shell as a weapon and mainly uses mid-ranged attacks.
  • Toad – Known in the Japanese version as Kinopio. He is another projectile fighter. He fights with bombs and explosives, but his attacks are relatively weak.
  • Donkey Kong – Known in-game as DK. A very powerful, yet slow, character who specializes in grabs and short-range abilities.
  • Boo* - Known in the Japanese version as Teresa. The sub-boss character who can turn himself into a greyscale version of the player's character then turn back who his old self when defeated.
  • Kamek* – Known in the Western arcade version as Magikoopa. The mid-boss character who has a wide variety of magic at his disposal.
  • Bowser* – Known in the Japanese version as Koopa. The final boss character who fights using the Koopa Clown Car.
