Line 1: Line 1:
An '''item''' is an object that either randomly appears on-stage during a match or is summoned by a character's special move, that can be picked up and used by characters. Many items can be wielded once picked up, while others apply an effect, and almost all can be thrown at opponents. Items are a large part of the gameplay of the ''Super Smash Bros.'' series, but problems with randomness and inconsistent risk/reward balance results in tournament rulesets universally requiring that random spawning of items be disabled using the Item Switch before starting the match.

Items are a large part of the gameplay of the ''Super Smash Bros.'' series, but problems with randomness and inconsistent risk/reward balance results in tournament rulesets universally requiring that random spawning of items be disabled using the Item Switch before starting the match. Various items that weren't present in the original release of ''Super Smash Bros. Ultimate'' will return.

*For this expansion, there was in the planning board the possibility of carrying two items at the same time. This detail was canceled because some characters would look awkward when holding.

*Outside of Bandai Namco and Konami, there was in consideration the idea of having more items from other third-party franchises that never made it for this updated version. Some of these included:

Latest revision as of 02:17, 30 November 2023

An item is an object that either randomly appears on-stage during a match or is summoned by a character's special move, that can be picked up and used by characters. Many items can be wielded once picked up, while others apply an effect, and almost all can be thrown at opponents. Items are a large part of the gameplay of the Super Smash Bros. series, but problems with randomness and inconsistent risk/reward balance results in tournament rulesets universally requiring that random spawning of items be disabled using the Item Switch before starting the match. Various items that weren't present in the original release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will return.

Items

Image Description Heavy? Series

Smash Ball SSBU Item Render
Smash Ball
Flies around the stage. Characters must break in order to obtain. Once broken, player presses their neutral special button to use their Final Smash. Will fly off-stage after a short period if not obtained and used. No Super Smash Bros.

Fake Smash Ball SSBU Item Render
Fake Smash Ball
Flies around the stage, similar to the Smash Ball. Characters can break it in order to activate. Once broken, it will explode. No Super Smash Bros.

Crates
Crate
Contains many items. Has a one-in-eight chance of exploding when thrown, or hit with enough force to break. Yes Super Smash Bros.

Rolling Crate SSBU Item Render
Rolling Crate
When thrown, struck, or landing on a hill, it will roll across the stage and damage what it hits without breaking, though it will break with enough force. Can be stood on. Yes Super Smash Bros.

BlastBox
Blast Box
Very poor throwing distance. Explodes upon taking 30% damage or a flame attack. Yes Super Smash Bros.

Barrel Variations (SSBB Artwork)
Barrel
Once thrown, struck, or landed on a slope, may roll across the stage and damage what it hits before breaking. Has a one-in-eight chance of exploding. Yes Super Smash Bros.

Capsule SSBU Item Render
Capsule
Contains a single item. Has a one-in-eight chance of exploding. No Super Smash Bros.

Party Ball
Party Ball
Once activated by being thrown or damaged, it floats into the air and opens, dropping its items. Yes Super Smash Bros.

Sandbag Spirit
Sandbag
When attacked, produces items. No Super Smash Bros.

SSB4 - Motion-Sensor Bomb
Motion-Sensor Bomb
Attaches to the stage once thrown; characters that approach it after a short time cause it to explode. No Super Smash Bros.

Home-Run Bat SSBU Item Render
Home-Run Bat
An extremely powerful item. Its forward smash is among the most powerful attacks in all four games, being a one-hit KO in every one. As a throwing item, it maintains its high knockback and is a semi-spike. In Brawl, forward smash uses a unique animation. It becomes stronger when hit on the tip. No Super Smash Bros.

Beam Sword SSBU Item Render
Beam Sword
Starting in Melee, gets longer when swung depending on character. Peach has a rare chance of plucking one when using Vegetable. No Super Smash Bros.

Fan
Fan
Fastest-swinging battering item. High shield damage. No Super Smash Bros.

SSB4 - Ray Gun
Ray Gun
Fires blasts of energy that have infinite horizontal range. No Super Smash Bros.

Smash.4 - The Bumper
Bumper
Can be placed on the stage or (starting in Brawl) set in midair, where it will knock away characters that touch it. If two or more are present, they can be used to momentarily trap characters by bouncing them back and forth. No Super Smash Bros.

Food (SSF2)
Food
Each type of food recovers a different amount of damage. Can be produced in large numbers by Peach Blossom. No Super Smash Bros.

Cloaking Device Screenshot
Cloaking Device
Renders the user mostly invisible and makes them immune to damage (but not knockback). No Super Smash Bros.

GooeyBomb
Gooey Bomb
When thrown, attaches to characters and can transfer to other characters that pass by. Explodes after a certain time or if attacked when not on a character. No Super Smash Bros.

Assist Trophy SSBU Item Render
Assist Trophy

Trivia

  • For this expansion, there was in the planning board the possibility of carrying two items at the same time. This detail was canceled because some characters would look awkward when holding.
  • Outside of Bandai Namco and Konami, there was in consideration the idea of having more items from other third-party franchises that never made it for this updated version. Some of these included:
    1. Monitor (Sonic the Hedgehog)[1]
    2. Phoenix Down (Final Fantasy)
    3. Tranquilizer Gun (Metal Gear)
    4. E-Tank (Mega Man)
    5. Evoker (Persona)
    6. Heavy Machine Gun (Metal Slug)
